September Artist of the Month: N. Brian Hopkins

Colorful photograph of the Copper Star Coffee sign by September Artist of the Month.September artist of the month is N. Brian Hopkins, a real life astrophysicist. His works diverge from astrophotography and show his colorful take on the Melrose District. You may check out his website here.

You have a Master’s in Astrophysics. What led you down that path originally?

I’ve been interested in the stars since childhood, when someone gave me a small telescope. At the same time I was told by teachers to go into the arts as a child, that I was very creative. [I] got interested in electricity, then electronics, [got] a BA in Physics, then Masters in Astronomy from UMass. While there I had a key to the Amherst Planetarium where I put on free shows to the public and school kids. [I] knew that is what I wanted to do, and not go for a PhD.

Why did you follow your particular career path?

I didn’t like research, I like the big picture, the aesthetics of astronomy. I was adjunct faculty for two colleg

es teaching astronomy, and I was director of a planetarium for 15 years.

It says on your Website that you provided multi-media for planetariums and now you provide visual and sound experiences for clubs. How did your career morph from one to the other?

The planetariuim work got me into special effects, multi-media. I learned how to do soundtracks and put programs together. we got awards, great attendance. Recently, I got myself some equipment and I make VegasPro programs for small clubs.

Why the shift into shooting more street type photography? What made you choose the Melrose District?

I live in the Melrose district, like the concept of the vintage shops, like the small business’ uniqueness of the buildings, etc. And thought focusing on one area would have more impact.

Copper Star Coffee is Locally Owned and Operated

The door of a black safe is painted with Copper Star Coffee and Wm. and Ginger Sandweg ProprietersCopper Star Coffee owner, Bill Sandweg, is not content to sit in the office and run things behind the scenes. So Bill is in the trenches with the rest of his staff. On any given day he can be seen in front of the stove frying up eggs for the breakfast bagel sandwich, or greeting customers as he runs the register. And on many occasions he’s performing barista duties.

Having a local connection definitely makes a difference as evidenced by the wonderful staff, many who have worked at Copper Star for years. Of course, what makes this place a truly local destination are the fantastic customers new and old. Some of Copper Star’s customers have been with CSC since the beginning, 14 years ago.

Dog Friendly Patio

A pink dog bowl with drawn pictures of dogs and cats sits on the patio at Copper Star Coffee.Dog friendly patios are an important part of Phoenix life. That’s why we welcome your friendly dog kid on our patio. It’s open all year, rain or shine, cold or hot. During the summer we’ve got misters and during the winter we light a fire in our custom fire pit.

Our dog friendly patio is one of the many wonderful things that makes CSC a true neighborhood coffee shop.

Friendly PSA: Do not leave your dog in your car with the windows closed, it’s illegal. And when the temperature is 70º degrees outside, it can be 100º in your car, even with the windows cracked! Keep the air conditioning running and still get your CSC fix by coming through our drive-thru.

One of Copper Star Coffee's big Rice Krispies® Treats on a plate.

Bakery Staples: Homemade Rice Krispies® Treats

Rice Krispies® Treats are the memories of childhood. They are nostalgia—one of the first things we made as a kid. We remember standing on a stool so we could reach the bowl on the counter. Stirring, stirring, stirring until it was time to press the still warm treat into the pan. Then waiting, waiting, waiting for it to cool just enough to cut it into squares so we could finally eat it. Sigh.

Our homemade Rice Krispies® Treats are available fresh each morning while supplies last. And, just like our honking brownies, these treats are BIG.

Colorful abstract art oil painting on a large canvas.

August Artist of the Month: Brandi Sager

Enjoy our interview with artist Brandi Sager. Her colorful and whimsical abstract works are up at Copper Star until Saturday, August 31. In addition to her original pieces, she also has prints in a variety of formats. Check them out here.

How did you get started as an artist?

When I was a child I would paint, write, and draw in every moment of free time. I would paint with my grandma who was a Bob Ross fan.  And I have countless hours under my belt in landscapes. Although, happy little trees are nice, there was only so many I could paint and abstract became my love.

Tell me about your new business, Become the Sage.

Art became my way of releasing, finding freedom and expressing deep emotion. I became a massage therapist and holistic healer when I was seventeen and I co-own a successful wellness business. Without art as a medium, I would say, my healing journey and many others would be incomplete without it. It has been a lifelong dream to work with art as the forefront of what I do in the healing process, instead of a personal passion.

Become the Sage [offers] teachings and workshops that have been developed over the last 20 years of experience in the healing field. Our workshops include nature, creativity, self inquiry and sharing our power stories in community. I believe as we clear what is no longer serving us and we learn to express ourselves, we awaken into more deep and meaningful exchanges in life. To create is to know who you are at the deepest level, to let go is to live without fear.

What is something not a lot of people know about you?

I make and work with my own [holistic] medicine items including herbs and oils. I do this to ensure the quality, and the ethical and environmental impact.
